The prime minister says Australia will “be putting up to Russia” and implement sanctions over its actions towards Ukraine.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced” We will impose sanctions against Russia after President Putin recognised two breakaway pro-Russia regions in Ukraine as separate.
“The invasion of Ukraine has effectively already begun,” Mr Morrison told reporters on Wednesday.
“Australia always holds up to aggressors and we’ll be standing up to Russia … Australia will instantly be placing restrictions on Russian individuals.”
Mr Morrison said Australia will enforce travel bans and aimed financial sanctions on eight members of Russia’s national security council.
He said Australian broader sanctions will be extended to the nationalist Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, which have open to capital across a number of regions including networks & telecommunications, oil, gas and military reserves.
“Russia is behaving as thugs and aggressors, and they should be termed out as being thugs and bullies,” Mr Morrison said.
Mr Morrison warned a full-scale incursion of Ukraine could get underway within the next 24 hours.
He said Australia has already started taking action concerning cybersecurity and will get ready for cyber counter – attacks.
Mr Morrison said his greatest concern is for Ukrainians and Australians of Ukrainian descent.
