Getting a learner’s license in Australia includes a few tests. You also need to study to understand the road rules and pay the relevant fees.

Getting your Ls on the first attempt
By following a few guidelines, it is easy to obtain a learner’s license.
- Study the traffic rules and go for practice tests. Study the Road User’s Handbook thoroughly and keep practising the online driver knowledge tests. It is quite likely that you will come across similar questions during the test.
- Book the test when you are relaxed. Choose a convenient time for the test so that you can be relaxed and focused.
- Stay calm during the test. Take your time during the test as there is no time limit. Read the question and the choice of answers carefully.
- Observe the driver. Whenever you are riding in a car, observe and try to understand the road rules.
Cost to get a learner’s license
The Driver’s Knowledge Test costs about $46. When you pass that, you need to pay $25 for a learner driver’s license. This includes $13 for a Road Users Handbook and $17 for a learner driver logbook. Your learner’s license is valid for five years.
Rules for learner drivers
- Only drive a car
- Drive under the supervision of an unrestricted Australian driver’s license
- Have L plates displayed clearly both at the front and rear of the car
- Follow the speed limit
- Do not tow other vehicles
- No drinking and driving
- Cannot supervise another learner driver
- No use of mobile phones while driving including hands-free and loudspeakers, even while stopped but not parked
- Carry only the number of passengers that can be properly seated in the car
- Cannot drive in Parramatta Park or Centennial Park in Sydney.
Learner drivers get demerit points if they fail to comply with the road rules or learner driver rules. If you exceed 4 demerit points within three years, your learner’s license will be refused or suspended.
